Chiefs Get Rashee Rice Back, But Defense Faces A Messy Test

Rashee Rice returns for the Chiefs against Denver, but key defensive injuries create a dangerous imbalance. Here is the real story for Kansas City fans.

The Kansas City Chiefs are sitting pretty at 2-0, but that perfect record faces a serious test this Sunday. The team heads to Miami for its first road game of the 2026 season, and the atmosphere will be electric. The Dolphins have not won a single game yet, which makes this their home opener. That status changes everything. A winless team playing at home is desperate, and desperation makes dangerous plays.

The Trap of the Winless Opponent

Many fans might think the Dolphins are an easy target because they have zero wins on the board. That is a mistake. George Karlaftis, a veteran on the Chiefs defense, knows exactly what is coming. He told reporters that the Dolphins are hungry and motivated. “They (Dolphins) haven’t gotten a win yet, so it’s their home opener,” Karlaftis said. The young squad has a new head coach and a revamped roster, meaning they are ready to make a statement. They want their first win of the season more than anything.

Karlaftis made it clear that the Chiefs cannot take their foot off the gas. “We want to win every single game going in,” he said. “So, it’s the same message every week.” The defense needs to be ready for a team that has nothing to lose and everything to gain. The points allowed against the Colts in Week 2 didn’t tell the full story of the defensive effort. Nick Bolton and Jaden Hicks both recorded double-digit tackles against Indianapolis, with Bolton tallying 13 total stops. Those veterans need to set the tone immediately.

Simmons Injury Clouds the Outlook

While the defense prepares for a battle, the offensive line faces its own headache. A back injury will cause left tackle Josh Simmons to skip Wednesday practice once more. Head coach Andy Reid confirmed the status, noting that Simmons is getting better but will not play today. “He’s getting better, but he won’t go today,” Reid said. The team is waiting for the swelling to subside before making a final call on Sunday.

Simmons has not practiced since mid-August, and his absence raises questions about the protection for Patrick Mahomes. “There’s a spot in there that flared up,” Reid explained. You must remain seated here and wait for that thing to settle down now. The staff knew it might take a few games for Simmons to get healthy. “He’s working his tail off, it’s just — we knew it would be a couple, two, three, four games in here as long as he was making progress,” Reid added. If the offensive line is thin, the road trip becomes much harder.

The Road Test Begins Now

The Chiefs have enjoyed the comfort of Arrowhead Stadium for their first two games. Now they must prove they can win on the road. The Dolphins are looking for their first victory, and they will bring their best effort to the field. Chris Jones and the coordinators know the stakes are high. The game is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday and will be broadcast on CBS. The Chiefs cannot afford to let a desperate team steal a win in Miami.
