L’Jarius Sneed, a key piece of the secondary, saw his role shrink in a big way during Sunday night’s 20-3 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks.

Sneed played just 14 snaps total, which breaks down to only 11 coverage snaps. That represents 20% of the defense’s total snap volume, a sharp drop from his usual workload. Safety Christian Roland-Wallace stepped up to lead the team in reps at the slot cornerback spot, playing 31 snaps. Roland-Wallace performed well by allowing only three catches for 15 yards on three targets, whereas Sneed surrendered five catches for 83 yards along with four first downs. This marked the lowest playing time Sneed has experienced in any single game throughout the current season.

Why the Shift Happened

As the match progressed, the Chiefs modified their lineup to leave Sneed out, a decision confirmed by the resulting snap counts. When the Chiefs next encounter elite slot receivers comparable to those in Seattle, the strategy might change significantly.

Offensive Woes Deepen the Problem

The offense gave the defense no help, which made the defensive struggles even worse. The Chiefs’ wideouts combined for only 39 receiving yards on 13 targets. Patrick Mahomes provided minimal relief after the Seahawks’ defense stifled the Chiefs’ passing offense, as the quarterback missed several throws. Although the Chiefs secured a victory over the Denver Broncos via running plays in Week 1, the passing offense failed to improve this week.
