Patrick Mahomes is finally addressing the elephant in the room. For years, whispers from rivals and fans alike claimed the Kansas City Chiefs receive every favorable call in close contests. After Sunday night’s 33-30 overtime win over the Indianapolis Colts, the quarterback stopped ignoring the noise and spoke directly about it. He did not deny the reputation. Instead, he laughed about how angry social media would have been if the call had gone the other way.

An Honest Reaction to a Controversial Play

The game came down to a messy moment in overtime. Colts receiver Laquon Treadwell lost possession when Chiefs cornerback Nohl Williams punched the ball out of his grasp. The officials first ruled it a fumble, which would have ended the game right there. But replay showed Treadwell was touched down before he lost the ball. The call was overturned to a complete pass with Treadwell down by contact at the Chiefs’ 17-yard line. Mahomes told reporters he was actually glad the call was flipped. He said, “I was actually kinda glad, I didn’t want to see Twitter’s reaction if they would’ve called it a fumble,” per MARCA. That is a bold admission from a superstar who usually plays it cool. He knows the world is watching every inch of tape.

Fighting Through the Mess to Win

The Chiefs did not look perfect on Sunday. They had to grind through a tough night to get the W. Mahomes threw for 382 yards and three touchdowns, finishing 32 of 47 attempts. He admitted the team struggled at times. “It wasn’t always pretty,” Mahomes stated. He noted that there were moments when the team failed to execute at a high level. Yet the players kept fighting and pushing until they ultimately found a way to win at the end. This resilience is the real story, not the officiating. The team improved to 2-0 despite the rough patches. Travis Kelce secured nine receptions for 101 yards while scoring his first touchdown of the season. The offense had to answer after falling behind, and they did just that.

History on the Line in Overtime

This win adds another layer to Mahomes’ incredible legacy in close games. Since 2018, he has now directed 31 game-winning drives during the fourth quarter or overtime. He is also 8-0 as a starter in regular-season overtime games. That is the best undefeated record for a starting quarterback in NFL history. Stats show he is back to his old self after a rusty start in Week 1. The team travels to Florida next to play the Miami Dolphins.
