Chiefs Face Jets Rebuild Mode Before Trade Deadline

The Kansas City Chiefs play the Jets on Sunday. Arrowhead Addict details five trade targets, including Garrett Wilson, as New York enters full rebuild mode.

The Toronto Blue Jays are not sitting around waiting for luck to return. They are taking the Kansas City Royals apart on the scoreboard while shuffling their infield like a deck of cards. According to Sports Illustrated, the Jays secured seven victories in their last nine contests following a dominant 9-2 triumph on Friday. This isn’t a fluke. It is a calculated push toward the final Wild Card spot, and they are only one game out.

Scherzer Finds His Rhythm Again

It is easy to forget Max Scherzer is still pitching at a high level. For weeks, the numbers looked ugly with a 6.16 ERA and a 2-7 record. But look closer at the last six starts since August began. Sports Illustrated reports that he has reduced his ERA to 3.62 while recording 28 strikeouts across 32 1/3 innings. Last Sunday against Seattle, he threw seven scoreless innings, allowed just one hit, and struck out 10.

Scherzer knows the Royals well. In his last five starts against Kansas City, he holds a 3-2 record with a 3.80 ERA. The last time he pitched at Kauffman Stadium, it was a disaster in September 2025 where he allowed seven runs in just 2/3 of an inning. He will try to erase that memory tonight. Seth Lugo takes the mound for the Royals with a 5.03 ERA. Since last August 2, Lugo has been bombarded, allowing an 8.31 ERA in six outings. The Jays’ pitching depth is simply better right now.

A Defensive Shuffle for the Win

The lineup changes show just how desperate Toronto is to win. They brought back Andres Gimenez at shortstop, a move that screams urgency. Gimenez admits the position is tough. “I don’t know, shortstop is a little bit harder and there are so many superstars playing shortstop, to be honest,” Gimenez said during Spring Training via Sportsnet.

But he stepped up when called. “The position right now it’s more (for) the team. Yahoo Sports quotes Gimenez stating, “They contacted me and explained the requirement for a shortstop in case no deals are finalized.” Manager John Schneider trusts him completely. “His knowledge of where everyone is at a given point and thinking a little bit ahead of guys too, is tremendous, Schneider said. Ernie Clement moves to second base to make this work. Per heavy.com, the squad increased its catching reserves by securing Shawn Ross from the New York Mets via waivers.

The Clock Is Ticking for Kansas City

The Blue Jays are built to win right now. The entire infield is under contract for next season, locking in stability. With a payroll of approximately $275 million this season, they have the resources to make moves. MLB.com notes that the team can allocate an additional $80 million this offseason without exceeding the current year’s payroll. The Royals, meanwhile, are watching a team that just took 9 runs off them.

Blue Jays insider Arden Zwelling noted the roster moves clearly. Sports Illustrated reports that the New York Mets saw catcher Shawn Ross claimed off waivers by the Blue Jays. Ross has been optioned to triple-A Buffalo,” Zwelling wrote on X. This team is not giving up. They are chasing down the Cleveland Guardians for that final playoff spot. The arrow is down for Toronto. From my perspective, running the same lineup might yield better outcomes, yet the future appears less promising, according to MLB.com. Kansas City needs to wake up before the Jays leave town with the division lead. First pitch is set for 8:10 p.m. at Kauffman Stadium, as reported by Sports Illustrated.
