Chiefs Get Rashee Rice Back, But Defense Faces A Messy Test

Rashee Rice returns for the Chiefs against Denver, but key defensive injuries create a dangerous imbalance. Here is the real story for Kansas City fans.

Lugo’s Worst Night Before the Deadline

Seth Lugo surrendered five runs over just five-plus innings. Royals Review noted he walked five batters while striking out a measly three. That walk rate of 9.0 per nine innings put a massive exclamation point on a questionable decision to retain his services. The Royals dropped an 8-1 decision to the Colorado Rockies in a contest that wrapped up faster than most fans expected. It was a rough way to end a trip to Denver.

Just a couple of weeks ago, writers argued the franchise needed to learn from failing to trade Lugo last year. Now the clock is ticking down with less than 24 hours remaining before the 2026 trade deadline. Rumors suggest Lugo holds significant value on the market, yet the front office seems paralyzed. They haven’t moved Michael Wacha either. The team risks waiting too long to extract actual value for these arms.

Bummer’s Debut Goes Wrong

Aaron Bummer made his Royals debut, and it went worse than Lugo’s outing. Kansas City added Bummer to the roster today while shipping Luinder Avila to the injured list. He entered in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and nobody out. Bummer immediately surrendered a two-run double, a three-run home run, and another RBI double. He finally escaped the frame after coughing up five runs.

The Royals likely won’t keep Bummer for long. The club will probably call up Lucas Braun to fill the rotation spot Avila left open later this week. Nate Pearson and Steven Cruz did pitch quality innings in relief, which provided a rare bright spot. But the damage was already done by the time they took the mound. The offense couldn’t help them either.

How much more can this pitching staff absorb before the deadline?

Freeland’s Complete Game and Witt’s Return

Kyle Freeland threw a complete game for the first time since 2022. It marked his first career complete game, a rare feat in modern baseball. He worked around a one-out double from Salvador Perez and a single from Starling Marte. John Rave scored the Royals’ sole run of the second inning off a Luke Maile single. Jac Caglianone had a double in the third, but that was the last hit the team generated until the ninth.

Eduardo Rodriguez stands alone in MLB history with over 250 starts yet zero complete games following this defeat. The team has a day off tomorrow, but the trade deadline hits at 5 PM Central. Starling Marte and John Schreiber are expected to be moved for entertainment purposes tomorrow. At least Bobby Witt Jr. is scheduled to return on Tuesday, barring another setback that has plagued the team this year.

  • Lugo allowed 5 runs on 5 walks and 3 Ks.
  • Bummer gave up 5 runs in his debut appearance.
  • Freeland pitched a complete game for the first time since 2022.
  • Trade deadline is set for 5 PM Central tomorrow.
