The Kansas City Chiefs missed out on Jauan Jennings in the spring, but that door might be swinging wide open again. The team entered its bye week as the AFC’s only undefeated squad, yet the wide receiver room remains a glaring weak spot. Injuries to Tyquan Thornton and Rashee Rice have forced the front office to look hard at the trade market. According to Yahoo Sports, the Vikings are already discussing the possibility of moving Jennings just weeks after he signed.

In May, ESPN’s Adam Schefter informed the “Pat McAfee Show” that Jennings was a target for Kansas City. “The Chiefs and Commanders also were interested in Jauan Jennings,” Schefter said. At the time, Minnesota handed him a one-year deal worth up to $13 million dollars. It’s about $8 million dollars in base pay. That contract was supposed to be a bridge to something bigger. Instead, it has turned into a short, ugly nightmare for Minnesota.

The Fit Just Never Happened

Jennings has played in only three games so far this season. He earned just one start and caught a mere two passes for nine yards on four targets. Those numbers are brutal for a player with his resume. Two seasons prior with the San Francisco 49ers, he recorded 77 receptions totaling 975 yards along with six touchdowns. Last year in the Bay Area, he added 55 catches for 643 yards and nine TDs. The drop-off is real and it is happening right now.

Minnesota recently signed Odell Beckham Jr., which signals a shift in their plans. On Friday, Phil Mackey and Judd Zulgad from SKOR North’s “Purple Daily” debated the probability that Minnesota will part ways with Jennings soon. “There’s no way anyone involved figured that it would look like this,” Mackey said. The chemistry simply isn’t there after the first month of the 2026 campaign.

A Cheap Fix for a Real Problem

The Chiefs need a tough possession receiver who can block well on the outside. They need someone to help the run game behind Kenneth Walker III. Jennings fits that specific description perfectly. If the Vikings decide to cut their losses, the trade price should be minimal. Zulgad added, “It feels like he’s not a fit.” That assessment suggests Kansas City could get a player they wanted for free in the spring at a steep discount now.

The front office spent cap space and draft assets to build a defensive line, but they did essentially nothing to add pass-catchers in the offseason. That oversight is now coming back to bite them. With the November 10 trade deadline looming, the Chiefs have a clear path to fix their biggest roster hole.
