Chiefs Pass Rush Stats Lie, But George Karlaftis Proves It

The Chiefs haven't recorded a sack in three games, but the real numbers show a top-10 unit that just can't finish. Here is why the panic is overblown.

The Chiefs defense isn’t letting Patrick Mahomes ride easy anymore. For the fourth straight day in St. Joseph, the unit showed up to fight, forcing the offense to earn every single yard. This isn’t the soft practice fans are used to seeing. Different Saturday vibes preceded Sunday’s rest before Monday’s pads, as the team looked forward. The defense is challenging Mahomes, and that’s exactly what needs to happen before the season starts.

Spagnuolo’s New Tricks

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is testing new looks that could change how the team plays in September. According to Arrowhead Pride, the first look at Dime personnel showed six defensive backs, one linebacker, and four pass-rushing threats up front. This setup puts L’Jarius Sneed in a slot role while Christian Roland-Wallace stays as the slot defender. It suggests Spagnuolo is considering using Sneed as the Dime safety to handle slot receivers and tight ends on pass downs. George Karlaftis and rookie R Mason Thomas teased an edge rush while Chris Jones and Felix Anudike-Uzomah rushed from inside. Chris Jones sat out as starter, allowing nose tackle Khyiris Tonga and rookie Peter Woods to form the interior, prompting the defense to show multiple fronts against the starting offense. Later, Spagnuolo deployed a three-man front that used Drue Tranquill as the fourth “on-ball” player. The defense is ready to be aggressive.

A Loud Gasp and a Hamstring

While the defense tested the offense, a scary moment happened on special teams that drew a loud gasp from the crowd. Rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen suffered a mid-practice injury during punt team work. Dave Toub addressed the situation directly, noting the difficulty of the moment. “I hate to see somebody get hurt, especially on special teams,” Toub said, according to reports. Toub added that Allen was doing well on offense and for him, too, but emphasized that everyone is a gunner and a returner until they aren’t. The team treats every player as a four-phase guy, especially rookies. This injury scare reminds everyone that the physical toll of camp is real, even on a breezy, sunny morning.

The Road to Pads

The team now faces a rest day on Sunday before the pads come on Monday. This break is crucial because the defense has already proven it will not give an inch. Felix Anudike-Uzomah stepped up to play more with the starting defense since Ashton Gillotte was unavailable due to a strained hamstring he suffered during Friday’s practice. The defense is showing multiple fronts, and the offense has to adjust. If the Chiefs want to win again, the defense must keep pushing Mahomes like this. The fans in St. Joe saw a team that is serious about winning. The rest day comes right when the team needs it most to recover from these intense sessions. Can the offense handle this pressure when the pads go on?
