Garrett Nussmeier knows the odds are stacked against him, but he isn’t backing down. The Chiefs rookie quarterback told reporters he will be ready whenever the team needs him to play. He admits the path to the starting job is steep, yet he remains focused on the work. It’s a promise from a player who has been overlooked before.
A Humbling Drop in Status
Nussmeier arrived in Kansas City with a different plan in mind last year. He was a top-ten pick in his own mind, leading a highly ranked LSU team. Things changed fast when an abdominal injury ruined his senior season. He tried to play through the pain, but he eventually lost the starting job at college. The draft reflected this fall. He waited until the 248th selection before the Chiefs called his name.
That late pick changed his entire outlook on the game. He spoke to reporters after a practice session in St. Joseph on July 25. He described the shift from being a favorite to winning the Heisman to being a rookie on the outside looking in. “It’s an awesome experience,” remarked the rookie. “I’m super grateful to be here. This is something I’ve dreamed about my entire life.”
He knows he is not the main guy right now. He sits behind Patrick Mahomes and Justin Fields. Both men are established veterans with big resumes. Nussmeier sees this as a gift rather than a curse.
Learning From the Best
The rookie isn’t wasting time. He spends his days watching how Mahomes runs his life and his routines. He listens to every word Andy Reid says, even when the coach talks to someone else. He wants to absorb everything he can from the legendary head coach. “I’m just trying to learn and grow in many different areas of my game,” Nussmeier explained.
Head coach Andy Reid sees the effort. He praised the young quarterback for his work ethic during the camp days in St. Joe. Reid noted that Nussmeier moves the offense well when he gets the ball. “Every time he’s in, he moves the ball,” Reid said. This is high praise for a player who was picked late in the draft.
Nussmeier knows he has a lot to prove to the fans. He understands that the preseason is his only real chance to show what he can do. He isn’t worried about the pressure. “I’m super grateful for the opportunity,” he said. He added, “and whenever I get to play, I’ll be ready.”
The Chiefs need depth at quarterback more than ever. Mahomes is great, but he cannot play every snap forever. Fields brings a different skill set to the table. Nussmeier brings the fire of a player who fought his way back from injury. He has the chance to be the guy who steps up if things go wrong.
Ready When the Call Comes
Can Nussmeier really be ready in a few weeks? The timeline is tight. He has to learn the playbook and build chemistry with the receivers. He has to earn the trust of the coaching staff. But he says he is up for the challenge. He believes he can make an impact when his number is called.
The Chiefs have a deep roster, but they always need smart players. Nussmeier fits that mold. He is willing to do the dirty work to get better. He knows the NFL is a harsh place where one mistake can end a career. He is taking nothing for granted.
