The Reality of a Missed Season
The 2026 season has been a total bust for Kansas City. The team hoped to compete in a weak Central Division, but that plan fell apart fast. Now, the August 3 trade deadline is right around the corner. General manager J.J. Picollo says the club is “open-minded to anything,” according to Royals Review. That sounds nice, but the math tells a harsher story. The Royals are almost certainly going to be sellers. The big question is how hard they will sell.
Just look at the roster. They have some expiring contracts that make sense to move. John Schreiber has been effective against right-handed hitters, giving up just a .178 average. But he struggles against lefties. Lane Thomas has hit .261 against left-handed pitching, making him a useful bench bat. Starling Marte is a solid clubhouse guy, but he is 37 years old with an 81 OPS+. The return for him will be light. Matt Strahm is a different story. He has given up 10 home runs in 34.2 innings with a 6.75 ERA. Unless a team thinks they can fix him quickly, he might stay home.
The Core Stays Put
Some fans might want a full tear-down. That would be a mistake. Bobby Witt Jr makes it impossible to completely dismantle everything.. and Maikel Garcia locked up long term, Picollo told reporters. Witt Jr. is a five-tool shortstop who signed an 11-year, $288 million deal. He is the face of this franchise. The team needs to keep the young talent intact while trading the veterans. It’s a really good starting point. Picollo stated the goal is improving the roster by adding players.. That is the only path that makes sense for the future.
The injury bug has made this even harder. The team has been snakebit with valuable pieces getting hurt. August should see Kris Bubic return to throwing, though his past injuries lower his trade worth.. Ineffectiveness and injury render Jonathan India and Carlos Estévez immovable.. Moving them makes no sense. The Royals need to be smart. They can’t afford to lose the future for a few minor picks today.
Winning in the Meantime
Even while losing, the team has found ways to fight. In a recent loss to the Twins, the Royals were forced to do things like “start Josh Rojas at shortstop” and “use Tyler Tolbert as a pinch hitter,” according to game reports. Rojas helped tie the game with a nifty double steal. Salvador Perez later scored the go-ahead run. The offense was terrible, striking out 14 times, but the spirit was there. Seth Lugo tossed six innings and allowed only one run. He induced double play after double play. The bullpen, however, imploded in the ninth. Alex Lange walked two batters and gave up a long fly ball that scored the winning runs for Minnesota.
The deadline is coming fast. The Royals must decide between a modest sell-off or a more aggressive re-tool. Trading rentals like Schreiber and Thomas is the smart play. It brings back assets without breaking the core. Selling the whole team would be a disaster. The fans want to see Witt Jr. and Garcia win. The front office knows this. They will likely trade the expiring deals and look to add depth for the young stars. The goal is simple. Get better for the next three years. Anything else is a failure.
